Sola pendant light

Product of the Day: Sola by David Trubridge

A little piece of the sun, indoors

Some lights simply illuminate a room; the Sola transforms it. Built from 60 individual bamboo pieces that fan out like the radiant flares of the sun, this pendant casts intricate, ever-shifting shadows across your walls and ceiling. Switch it on and the whole space softens into something warmer and more alive — a quiet centrepiece for a dining table, stairwell, or open living area that draws the eye and slows the evening down.

A design with a story

The Sola grew out of David Trubridge's celebrated Icarus installation, first shown in Milan in 2010, where three large winged forms circled a single glowing Sola — a retelling of the Greek myth of the boy who flew too close to the sun. The installation was later acquired by the Pompidou Centre in Paris, cementing the design's place in modern lighting history. Owning a Sola means living with a genuine piece of that lineage.

Crafted to last, made with care

Each Sola is made from three-ply FSC-certified bamboo, sustainably sourced and finished with natural, non-toxic oils rather than harsh solvents. It ships flat as a kitset and clips together by hand, keeping packaging and transport impact low. This is design built for longevity, not fleeting trends — the kind of object you keep for decades and pass on.

Why it's worth it

At $3,418 NZD, the Sola sits firmly in statement-piece territory, and it earns the price. This is destination lighting: a sculptural, gallery-worthy focal point that anchors a whole room and carries the weight of an internationally exhibited design. If you're investing in one defining light for your home, the Sola is a piece you'll never tire of looking at.
